Graduate Student Programs

A prime focus for the Department of Information Engineering is its supervision of graduate students. Indeed, supervision has equal place along with international level research and postdoctoral supervision. Industrial and other outside interactions are also geared to support the graduate students.

Historically, our emphasis at the graduate level has been on PhD student education, although recently there has been more supervision of students at the Master's level.

Students have their own desktop computers to a powerful network with appropriate resources. Every effort is made to attract students with Supplementary Scholarships to those eligible, and travel support to present papers at international conferences (up to AUD$6,000 per student).

Students are closely supervised, even on a daily basis at times in the early stages. Of course, it is hoped that students are more independent of their supervisors towards the end of their program. Also, a key part of our approach is to connect students into the international network of workers in their field by having a strong visitor and seminar program.

RSISE doctoral students are required to undertake some technical broadening coursework during their course and are encouraged to participate in several professional development courses on offer.

Students usually submit their thesis at about the three year mark, this being possible with the supervision support gained. Many have generated their theses on a progressive basis, one paper (chapter) every six months or so. These papers are presented to staff and students as seminars and in poster format, many available on the student web-pages.

Some students have outplacements for a few months in industry or overseas laboratories during their program. This allows for development of other dimensions than the ANU can provide, and guides in career path selection.

Students come from backgrounds in Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. They are supervised by a tenured staff member, often with the support of postdoctoral students and colleagues as advisors. For further information and application details, see
